Diagnostic tools and precision medicine in thyroid pathology

Our multidisciplinary research group focuses on the development of diagnostic tools and strategies that allow for individualized diagnosis and treatment of patients with thyroid pathology, particularly thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer. This approach will allow us to advance towards precision medicine, minimizing unnecessary risks and improving the quality of life of patients; and optimize the efficiency of the resources of our health care system. In addition, it is expected that this strategy will allow us to generate innovative solutions that will drive an economic return for IRYCIS and the society in general through the registration of patents and their subsequent commercialization.

Strategic objectives

  • To improve the diagnostic accuracy and reproducibility of ultrasound imaging in routine clinical practice in order to reduce the need for invasive diagnostic tests and to facilitate the follow-up of neoplasms.
  • To minimise invasive diagnostic procedures and to individualise treatment in patients with thyroid neoplasms by integrating clinical, radiological, anatomopathological and molecular data.

Research lines

  1. Development of technology to improve the diagnosis and follow-up of thyroid nodules by ultrasound imaging.
  2. Precision pre-surgical diagnosis of cytologically indeterminate thyroid nodules by integrating clinical, radiological, cytological and molecular features.
  3. Individualisation of radioiodine treatment in thyroid cancer patients.
